Is your home ready for technology?

If the latest technology or entertainment options are important in your new home, add the following questions to your buyer’s checklist.

  • If you need cable TV and broadband internet connections, make sure you have jacks in all the rooms that require them.
  • Although we use a lot of wireless and cordless phones you still need to have phone jacks for your main phone and such specialty items as Tivo.
  • Are you going to have a home theater or are you going to feed music to different parts of the house? If so you will need to wire additional speaker locations, etc.
  • What are you doing for internet connectivity? Will you be going wireless or will you need to run ethernet lines to the required rooms to interconnect your computers?
  • Are you going to be using broadband cable, DSL or satellite for your internet connection?
  • How many air conditioners and heaters do you have? Are they multi-zoned and are you going to be able to program the thermostats for your comfort in different rooms?
  • Will you be using any products that require special wiring such as special lighting on dimmers, electric drapes or blinds?
  • Are you installing a security system? If so, then the wiring needs to be considered when buying a home. Will it be accessible?
  • As time goes on technology will change again. Plan to have adaptable wiring configurations that can be modified for future updates.
