Hurricane tax break
The skies are blue and the balmy breezes of the Gulf of Mexico sweep across Naples, but everyone knows that this week is the official beginning of hurricane season. The Florida Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday begins this Friday and continues thru June 12th. These 12 days will enable residents to stock up on supply items free of sales tax. This will be the third year for this successful program and Gov. Charlie Christ is backing the program this time around. Generators are always the big favorite item to buy during this free sales tax period followed by the red fuel containers you see everywhere to run the generators. In total, Floridians will save on the order of $25 million in sales tax. Some of the qualifying items are batteries, lanterns, artificial ice, candles, any gas or fuel container, weather band radios, cell phone chargers, coolers, tarps or other weatherproof coverings, cell phone batteries, tie-down kits. Storm shutters are another big item that many residents look to add to their homes during this time period to fully prepare and secure their property.
This is a great program for the people of Florida, let’s hope it is just a wise thing to do and not something that we will actually need because of a real hurricane.
