The Mucky Duck in Captiva
The Mucky Duck on Captiva Island, home to the sassy wait staff and beautiful gulf front views, makes this the fun place to stop for lunch and dinner, with free sunsets to boot! In the early ’30’s, this home/restaurant was used as a tea house known then as the Gulf View Inn. Due to beach erosion, the home was moved 300 feet back to wear it sits today. The inn was eventually sold and was turned back into a home where it remained until it was sold in 1975. The new owners, the Mayerons and the Webbs, purchased it with the intent of using it as a rental property. However, while at the court house inquiring about rental property issues, the new owners discovered there was a beer and wine license that could be reactiviated for $100!!…well, hello…that was a no-brainer.
So, in January of 1976, the new business partners opened the Mucky Duck. Co-owner, Mr. Webb, was a bobby in London for 20 yrs and had frequented an old english pub in Stratford-on-Avon, known to the locals as The Mucky Duck…so was born the Captiva Mucky Duck. A true local favorite, as well as a must-be-seen tourist stop, one can never tire of the laid back style of this heart of Captiva tradition.
The grouper sandwich is a must and be sure to ask for the chipolte mayo to give it that little extra “Captiva Kick!” With amazing trade winds and beautiful vistas, you must stay around long enough to dig your toes into the pure, white sand and enjoy our sunsets native style. Who knows, you could even be one of the fortunate few who experience the green flash. Come on…join me…the rest of the world can wait….this is island livin’ folks.
