Naples Florida Red Cross Stocking Stuffers

Just a quick note to say kudos to all the volunteers from 8 to 80 that participated in the Stuff Stockings for our Troops event held this week at the Naples Red Cross.  Every year my wish is that this event wouldn’t need to take place, because that would be the sure indicator there was no war.  But, that’s just not reality so I pull my proverbial head out of the sand and play a very small part in helping where I can.   The Christmas stockings are a small token of our appreciation for all the memories our troops won’t be able to make with their families while we’re in the comfort of our homes with ours.  It lets them know that they are appreciated for their selflessness and sacrifice in protecting us.   The call that went out in the Naples Daily News was a big help in getting more volunteers to stuff the 850+ stockings that will be sent overseas to those that won’t be making it home for Christmas.  Every year there are great gifts that go into these stockings from the generous donations of our community.  Stockings contained everything from candies to spf, disposable wipes to sunglasses, warm socks, hard candies, phone cards, toothbrushes, etc.   Items that they need to make their lives bearable to fun things that will help occupy their minds to ease the daily grind of war including books and personal letters placed inside the Christmas card.  Santa’s workshop has nothing on our Naples Elves, what a sight to see!  For those that much is given, much is expected. Historic Palm Cottage Readying for Christmas

Get ready, set, go!  Yes, it’s nearing that time of year, and as of today, we’re under 100 days and counting until that wonderful jolly, bearded guy shimmies on down the chimney (yes, we actually have many lovely homes with fireplaces in Naples) or perhaps by boat.  But no matter how he arrives, the one thing we can count on is that it’s always a fast and furious time for families to get their “list” completed.  So, before all that happens, take some time to visit one of our historic homes, actually the only home in Naples listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  Palm Cottage, nestled right on 12th Ave slightly east of the pier in Olde Naples, is the perfect place to take some leisurely time just for you.  This year, for anyone that has taken the tour in year’s past, may see a bit of a difference this year:  it will be decorated to better suit what a home in Naples may have looked like during the holiday season in the early 1900’s.  You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine, which nowadays, could be a welcome change.  Built in 1895, and one of the few remaining Tabbie homes, the walls and slab were built from a construction material formed from taking sand and sea shells and burning them at an intensely high heat, forming it into an ancestor of what we commonly know today as concrete.  Hollywood stars such as Gary Cooper, Robert Montgomery and Heddy Lamar were frequent guests of the owner, Laurence Brown.  An interesting factoid:  the house was purchased in the late 1970’s by the Collier County Historical Society for $100,000 and restored in 1996 for over $300,000. Santa will also be available for the “youngins” under 10 years of age on December 9 through 11 from 5 – 7 pm.  No reservations needed and volunteers are on hand.  For more information and a complete schedule of events, contact them at either 239-261-8164 at the Naples Historical Society or online at
