Continuing from January 20 to March 11 – Golf in American Art and Fairways, Flags and Traps: An NAA Members Juried Exhibition.
March 1 (5:30 – 9 p.m.) – Goddess Night. This event for women only celebrates the creative, goddess-like aspects of the female mind, body and spirit with an evening devoted entirely to empowering and enriching women. Thematic panels of experts will conduct interactive presentations and roundtable discussions on topics such as managing finances, coping with major life changes, successful strategies for networking in Naples, one-minute makeovers, art buying and collecting, health and stress management, and interior decorating. Tickets are $75 per person and include hors d’oeuvres, wine, dinner by Angela’s Fine Cuisine and entertainment under the stars on the Art Center’s back patio, two one-hour educational sessions, and a gift bag.
March 1 – Session IV Studio Art Classes for Youth begin. Four six-week evening classes for students ages 10-17 are offered: oil painting, advanced drawing, photography, and introduction to theatre arts.
March 1 to 3 (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) – Naples and Nature II painting workshop. Let’s take advantage of the beautiful landscape in Naples! Grab your supplies and join instructor Kevin Shea on daytrips to the coast and inland to paint. This workshop will include highly descriptive processes, instruction, and daily painting exercises. Designed with both novices and professionals in mind. Students will work at their own pace while enjoying their surroundings. Fee is $275for NAA members/$300 for non-members.
March 3 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) – Art in the Park. Naples’ oldest outdoor art festival celebrates its 50th anniversary season by showcasing artwork from Naples Art Association members. March’s Featured Artist is Gisela Miller. Held in Cambier Park and on Park St., alongside The von Liebig Art Center. Free admission.
March 3 to 5 (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) – Watercolor Figure Painting, Intermediate/Advanced. Hone your artistic skills through simplification. Master of watercolor Charles Reid will focus on painting from a live model in varying light. Students will have the opportunity to critique work, follow a demonstration, and enhance their painting skills. Special focus will be placed on value, color, and edges. Fee is $650 for NAA members/$700 for non-members and includes model fee.
March 8 and 9 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) – Building and Using a Pinhole Camera. What can you make out of oatmeal containers, candy tins, and paint cans? A pinhole camera! This workshop by instructor Richard Sullivan will teach students to make and use their own pinhole camera. Students will also learn to process the negatives in our professional darkroom and make photo grams, contact sheets, and final prints. Fee is $225 for NAA members, $250 for non-members plus a $25 materials fee for all.
March 16 (6 – 10 p.m.) – Samuel Edmund Oppenheim Retrospective. The Naples Art Association, in partnership with The Estate of Samuel Edmund Oppenheim and Miller Gallery of Cincinnati, OH, will host a retrospective show and sale of original oil paintings by Oppenheim. This is the first major collection of works by the artist assembled since 1994 and includes figurative works, landscapes and still lifes. Oppeneheim (1901-1992) was born in Russia and immigrated with his family to New York City, where he eventually established himself as a pre-eminent painter and teacher at the Art Students League. Oppenheim’s exquisite paintings are celebrations of beauty, and his style is synonymous with romantic impressionism. The subjects are intimate, rendered in loose, impressionistic brushstrokes and a harmonious color palette. According to Oppenheim’s wife, Emilie, the artist “felt every brushstroke, loved his subject matter, and painted from the heart.” Tickets are $75 per person and include cocktails, appetizers and a complimentary copy of the definitive book, “The Paintings of Samuel Edmund Oppenheim,” published in 1994.
March 18 to 20 (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) – Palette Knife in Oil and Acrylic - Floral and Landscape, Intermediate/Advanced. Hate to clean brushes? Learn the technique of loose Impressionistic painting using the palette knife…perfect for the art of floral and landscape painting in the studio or plein air. This workshop will include lectures, one-on-one instruction, and a class critique. Instructor Urania Christy Tarbet will also discuss how to choose the correct knife. Fee is $350 for NAA members/$375 for non-members. Students will also need to purchase their own knives.
March 22 to 24 (9 a.m. – 3 p.m.) – Landscape Painting in Pastel from Photographs, Intermediate/Advanced. Capture the plein air technique of painting from photo references and get tips on color in light and shadow that will bring your paintings to life as if they were painted in plein air. Students will learn about color harmony, color bounce, design, and the value of various under-paintings to create a mood in each painting. Instructor Urania Christy Tarbet will also include lectures, one-on-one instruction, and a class critique. Fee is $350 for NAA members/$375 for non-members.
March 22 (6 – 8 p.m.) – Members Preview Reception and Awards Presentation for the Jade Riedel Scholarship Competition. Several of the artists will be in attendance. (NOTE TO EDITORS: For the exhibition description, see the item below.) Admission is free for NAA members and $10 for non-members.
March 23 to April 8 – Jade Riedel Scholarship Competition. Each year the NAA awards $6,000 in scholarships through a juried art competition. This exhibition features work by Collier County high school students who wish to further their art studies at the college level.
March 23 (5:30 – 7:30 p.m.) – Members Preview Reception and Awards Presentation for the International Association of Pastel Societies Annual Exhibition. Several of the artists will be in attendance. March 24 to April 29 – International Association of Pastel Societies Annual Exhibition. Formed in 1994, the objective of IAPS is to celebrate worldwide the expanding presence of Dry Pastel as a major fine art painting medium. This exhibit is open to IAPS member societies worldwide.
March 26 (12 – 2 p.m.) – Lunch With the Arts. Collage and mixed media artist Kasoundra Kasoundra will celebrate Women’s History Month by discussing the role of women in the arts. Lunch sponsored and provided by Greek Gourmet. Admission is free for Naples Art Association members and customers of series sponsor Comerica Wealth and Institutional Management (and Comerica Bank, who show proof of relationship), and $5 for others. Lunch is served on a first-come, first-served basis, while everyone is invited to stay for the lectures. The Art Center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the exhibitions, library and gift shop is free.
